School Team

  • Sue Denham

    Executive Head Teacher

I moved to sunny Devon in 2007 after I had a look around Bratton Fleming School, fell in love with it, applied for the headship and was lucky enough to get the job! I am very proud to be the headteacher of such a special school – we have wonderful children, an amazing staff, dedicated governors and incredibly supportive parents. Every day is different and I certainly am never bored – the part I love the most though is getting a little knock on my office door, and in walks a pupil with a big smiley face, holding a very precious piece of work to share with me. Teaching is such a rewarding job! To relax, my most favourite place to be is paddling barefoot along the beach in the sunshine with my husband, crazy dog and any one of my 5 children!

  • Hannah Day

I have wanted to teach for as long as I can remember! I am especially committed to Early Years teaching. I qualified as a teacher in June 2008 and was very lucky to join Bratton Fleming Primary School in October 2008. I graduated from Rolle College with a 2.1 BA(hons) degree in Early Childhood Studies with Recognised Practitioner Status and then completed a final PGCE year. During my training I specialised in Modern Foreign Languages, a subject I am very passionate about and feel every child should have access to. I am trying to incorporate some of these ideas into everyday school life at school. I love my job and am so pleased to have been given the opportunity to make a big difference in a child’s life!

After working in many Primary Schools in the area I came to Bratton in 2002.Currently I teach Class Caen.
I am responsible for the PE throughout the school and we are well known for taking part in a large number of sporting activities ranging from football and rugby to aquathlons and cross country running! My sister also works here, she is called Mrs Heafield. My two children attend this school and I currently teach my eldest. My husband Nathan is also a teacher and we live in Pilton, Barnstaple. We are a very active family and at weekends we tend to either be watching rugby or playing it! We alsohave a border terrier called Archie; as you can see I am very outnumbered at home being the only female!

  • Nicole Benham

Whilst growing up, I always enjoyed school and this ignited my dream of becoming a teacher. I was first introduced to Bratton Fleming when I volunteered in Mrs Day's class back in 2011. I then returned to the school as a Trainee Teacher and a Supply Teacher, before joining the team permanently in 2015. This is my sixth year at Bratton, and I am now the teacher of Class Torridge and the school's Maths Subject Leader.

I attended Bratton Fleming school as a pupil, before leaving for secondary school in 2009. I always loved the caring community feel of the school and I am very excited to be back as a teacher! I also worked part time as an early years practitioner at Bratton Fleming Pre School. I graduated from Gloucestershire University with a BEd in Primary Education in 2019 with specialisms in maths and RE. I then joined Holywell school in September 2019 as a teacher. I moved to Bratton Fleming school in 2020 and I am now the teacher of Class Taw.

  • Sophie Austen

It’s fair to say that I took a slightly meandering route to teaching! After first studying Land Management at the University of Reading and then pursuing a career as a Chartered Surveyor in London for over ten years, I then embarked on a career change and qualified and worked as a TA before finally taking the plunge and doing my post graduate teaching qualification in 2016/17. Despite the long route here, I am thrilled to now be part of a profession that I feel truly passionate about and am extremely proud to be part of such a fabulous school! I have two sons, both of which have been to Bratton Fleming Primary (one is still here although in Year 6 so not for much longer!), two working cocker spaniels and (last but not least) a husband. We live just outside the village and love to spend our weekends walking, gardening or generally being active. I find my job incredibly rewarding and hope to inspire a love of learning for all of the children in my class as well as curiosity about and fascination in the world around us.

  • Heather Lake

I have two daughters who both attended Bratton Fleming School and a friendly cocker spaniel dog who rules the house! My hobbies include gardening and taking long walks either on the moors or beach. I have lived in North Devon all my life and I feel very privileged to live and work in such a beautiful area. I joined the school in September 1990, as an administrator. Over the years I have witnessed many changes within the school, including the major remodeling of the building in May 1992 which contributes to the wonderful learning environment we provide for your children.

One of my sisters’ also works here at Bratton Fleming and she teaches in Class 4. I live with my partner and my two sons and my two step daughters, although my eldest son is now at University and my youngest son could be on his way to University this year – a big change for them but even more so for me I think!! My hobbies and interests include ‘keeping fit’, painting, finding bargains at car boot sales and auctions and enjoying lots of time with my family which does include watching an awful lot of football matches both on the side line and T.V, but also beach days with lots of surfing.

Hi, I have been working for almost 17 years teaching and caring for children, as a 1:1 support assistant, an HLTA and delivering interventions. My current role in Bratton is 1:1 within Class Bray and Class Lyn which keeps me on my toes! It is a joy to make the journey to and from work in such lovely countryside with the bonus of a magnificent view from the School. My husband and I have 3 grown up sons who all work away from the area and we are both looking forward to our first family wedding next year in Devon. At the moment we are slowing renovating my husband’s birth home in Bideford with a view to eventually retiring there with our little black and white rescue cat, which is really keeping us fit as it is foot access only and up a steep hill; and again we have a beautiful view but this time it is over the River Torridge. I am very proud to have been born and bred in Devon.
